It’s been an hour. Despite your best intentions, you can’t seem to get started on that important task.

If you’re like most people, more than you’d like to admit. In fact, scientists have found that within the last 30 years, the number of people who chronically procrastinate has quadrupled!

What’s more, procrastination doesn’t only affect productivity – it can also influence happiness and self-esteem.

1. Learn How You Work Best

Everyone works best under different circumstances. Some people tend to be more productive at night, while some (whom we’re jealous of) work far better early in the morning.

While there isn’t a right or wrong way to work, learning to identify your work style can help you make the most of your time.

2. Create Lists

Walking into work and seeing a giant stack of papers or dozens of unread emails in your inbox isn’t a great way to start the day.

Take a deep breath. You can do this!

Before mountain climbers reach the pinnacle of Mt. Everest, they start with one tiny step.

Each day before you begin working, create a list of everything you need to accomplish. Once you’ve compiled a list of the day’s tasks, reorganize the list in chunks.

Compile like tasks with like tasks. If you need to send off an important email but also have tons of emails to respond to, block them together.

Psychology would suggest that our brains react to order and structure. We tend to feel less anxious, making it easier to get more done.

3. Evaluate Your Current Work Process

Being productive at work rarely happens automatically. It’ll take some insight into your own work habits.

Find an app to help track your time. There are plenty of free options you can install on your computer or phone. After a week, export the data and take a look at it.

Chances are you’ll start to notice some interesting habits. Maybe you tend to slack off a bit more before lunch or tend to spend more time on the Internet than you should.

This data isn’t intended to make you feel guilty, but to help you learn to maximize your efficiency.

Once you start to notice patterns, come up with ways to cut the clutter.

4. Take Breaks

As strange as it sounds, taking more breaks can help you become a more effective worker.

Breaks, even brief ones, give our brains a chance to take a breather and reset. According to experts, frequent breaks may also improve decision making and attention.

So next time you’re staring at that blinking cursor, don’t be afraid to get up and take a walk around the office or spend a few minutes returning those personal texts.

5. Change Your Environment

Routine can be a great thing. But like anything else in life, too much of a good thing can turn sour.

That’s because our brains crave novelty. We constantly want to experience new and exciting stimuli. But needless to say, most jobs don’t offer much in the way of new or exciting anything.

Still, you’re not hopeless. Even something small like redecorating your cubicle can satisfy your brain and make your old environment seem new again.

6. Minimize Tech Distractions

Breaks may be a great way to help your brain refresh and relax, but if you’re spending more time on your phone than working, tech is likely a big distraction for you.

Eliminate as many distractions as you can to help you focus.

Place your phone in a drawer or turn it over so the screen isn’t accessible. If you have a smartwatch, disable text notifications to limit temptation.

You can also hack your web browser by installing extensions to keep better track of your history, hide tabs, and more.

7. Eat Well

As the saying goes, you are what you eat.

If you’re feeling unproductive, you may need to head to the break room and grab a healthy snack. Your body may be in need of some crucial nutrients.

Snacks like almonds, bananas, apples, and peanut butter are all great choices. They’re filled with protein, potassium, and vitamin C.

Munching on some healthy treats can help your focus and boost your mood, too.

8. Take Time For Yourself

One of the most important tips for productivity we can offer is to take time out and enjoy yourself. Work is important, but it isn’t all there is to life.

Make time each day for your hobbies. At least one hour per day, even on your busiest days.

Not only will you get more done, but you’ll feel more personally fulfilled.

9. Break Complicated Tasks Into Steps

As wonderful as breaks and hobbies are, sometimes you just need to buckle up and get a task done.

But some tasks seem so intimidating. What sounds easier: Creating an outline or collecting, analyzing, and publishing your company’s quarterly earnings in a 15-page report?

We’re willing to bet you’d choose the former rather than the latter. If there’s a big task that you can’t seem to get started on, once again turn to the to-do list.

Break down the task into small, incremental steps. Then go back and add a few designated areas for breaks.

Suddenly that massive task will seem a lot easier to handle!

10. Follow The Five-Minute Rule

If all else fails, follow the five-minute rule.

The idea is simple. Get started on a task and work on it for five minutes straight. No interruptions, no distractions, just five minutes of pure hard work.

Most people find that once they get started, it’s easier to maintain momentum and see a task through to the end.
