Five reasons why dreams are important

If you’re feeling stuck in your current situation, reviving old dreams or finding new ones is a great way to develop your mental and emotional health. Read our top reasons why having a dream is important to everyone.

1.Helping you solve problems and deal with feelings

Having a dream that you strive towards can help with a lot of negative and positive feelings or thoughts. For example, having a tough day at work can be dealt with by thinking about your dream and how you will feel when you achieve it. Personal problems can also be looked at in a different light, or in a way that can help you achieve your dream.

2. Gives you courage

Having a dream may give you more courage to take reasonable risks. This can include things like going back into education, taking up a new creative hobby, or becoming more independent. Being more courageous can also support your emotional and mental health.  It can give you the bravery to tackle these issues on a daily basis, as opposed to ignoring or suppressing them.

3. Dreamers grow to be independent

Chasing after your dream can involve taking steps to become more independent. It also gives you the power to say ‘no’ to things that you may not want to do – a tool that can greatly support your emotional and mental health. Being independent also gives you the opportunity to prioritise yourself and your goals.

4. Distracting you from negative events

The ability to daydream and get lost in your imagination is a powerful tool to temporarily take you away from the stresses of everyday life. Using your imagination and creativity can stop your negative emotions from taking over. It will also help you find light in darker times.

5. Define yourself

Become who you want to be and develop your identity by having a dream, whether this is by striving for your dream job, focusing on your education or exploring a creative hobby. Driving towards a dream is a brave thing to do and is worth congratulating yourself on!
